Clay soil can be a real pain to work with as it often sticks to the end of the shovel. Try applying a coat of wax onto your spade, and then buff the spade head with a cloth prior to working with clay soil. The wax prevents the clay from sticking to the shovel, thus making it much easier to work with, and stops rust from forming.
