Fresh radishes with leaves

Radishes are a popular root vegetable known for their crisp texture, peppery flavour, and rapid growth. Ideal for beginner gardeners — they require minimal care, come in various colours and sizes, and are ready to harvest in as little as three weeks.

Health Benefits of Radishes

  • Low in calories: A healthy, guilt-free snack option
  • High in fibre: Supports digestive health
  • Rich in nutrients: Good sources of vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants
  • Hydrating: High water content helps maintain hydration in hot weather
  • Aids weight management: High fibre and water content promotes feelings of fullness

Optimal Growing Conditions

Soil: Loose, well-draining soil — sandy or loamy enriched with organic matter. Avoid compacted or heavy clay soils.

pH: Between 6.0 and 7.0.

Sunlight: Full sun preferred, at least 6 hours daily. Can tolerate partial shade in warmer climates.

Temperature: Cool weather is best — 10°C to 21°C (50°F–70°F). Tolerates light frost.

How to Plant Radishes

Radishes are best planted directly in the garden — they have a quick growth cycle and do not transplant well.

  • Loosen soil to at least 12 inches deep and mix in compost
  • Create rows spaced 12–18 inches apart
  • Sow seeds ½ inch deep, 1–2 inches apart
  • Water gently after planting

💡 Succession planting: Sow radish seeds every 2–3 weeks throughout the growing season for a continuous harvest from spring right through to autumn.

Pest Management

  • Flea beetles: Use floating row covers or diatomaceous earth around plants
  • Cabbage worms: Handpick or use organic insect soap

Harvesting Radishes

Radishes mature quickly — usually within 3 to 6 weeks depending on variety. Pull them when they reach about the size of a large marble. Left too long, they become woody and bitter. Harvest in the morning or evening when it's cooler to preserve crispness.

Popular Varieties

  • Red Globe: Classic round shape, bright red, mild flavour — great for salads
  • French Breakfast: Elongated with a white tip, mildly sweet — perfect for snacking
  • Black Radish: Larger and stronger flavour — best in cooked dishes or pickles
  • Daikon: Large white variety popular in Asian cuisine, crisp and mild
