When to Plant
Tomatoes thrive in warm weather. Plant after the last frost date in spring when soil temperatures reach at least 15°C (60°F). Depending on your climate, tomatoes can be grown from late spring to early autumn.
Ground vs Containers
✓ In the Ground
- Higher yield — more space to grow
- Deeper root systems — stronger, more drought-resistant plants
- Less maintenance watering
✗ In the Ground
- Requires dedicated garden space
- Soil quality needs careful management
✓ In Containers
- Ideal for patios, balconies and urban gardens
- Moveable for optimal sunlight
- Easier soil control
✗ In Containers
- Dries out faster — needs more frequent watering
- Generally produces fewer tomatoes
Pests and Diseases
- Aphids, whiteflies and tomato hornworms: Regular inspection, insecticidal soap
- Blight, blossom end rot and wilt: Ensure good air circulation and practice crop rotation
Care and Maintenance
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth — aim for 1–2 inches per week.
Fertilising: Use a balanced fertiliser or one high in phosphorus to promote flowering and fruiting.
Trellising: Supporting plants with stakes or cages keeps fruit off the ground and improves air circulation, reducing disease risk.
Harvesting: Pick when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch.
💡 Tip: Pinch out side shoots (suckers) on indeterminate (cordon) tomato varieties to channel energy into fruit production rather than excessive leafy growth.
